What Is Bi-Polar Ionization?

Bi-polar ionization is an active air purification technology that introduces a controlled quantity of positive and negative oxygen ions into the supply air of an HVAC system.

In natural environments - such as mountain regions or coastal air - these ions occur naturally and help neutralize airborne pollutants. In modern indoor spaces, particularly sealed and air-conditioned buildings, ion levels are significantly lower.

AtmosAir restores these naturally occurring ion levels indoors, recreating the “fresh air” effect found in clean outdoor environments - without adding chemicals, ozone, or fragrances.

How the Technology Works

AtmosAir systems use bi-polar ionization tubes that generate a low-energy cold plasma. This process:

  • Produces no heat or UV light

  • Creates no harmful by-products

  • Operates continuously while the HVAC system runs

The emitted positive and negative ions disperse through the air distribution system and into occupied spaces, where they actively interact with airborne contaminants.

What AtmosAir Removes or Reduces

Once released into the space, bi-polar ions:

  • Neutralize airborne pathogens (bacteria, viruses, mould spores)

  • Break down volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into harmless by-products

  • Agglomerate fine particulate matter (PM), making particles easier to filter or causing them to fall out of the breathing zone

  • Reduce allergens, odours, and smoke compounds

This occurs through natural chemical reactions that destabilize pollutants at a molecular level, preventing them from remaining airborne or biologically active.

AtmosAir is designed to be HVAC-integrated into the air handling system, treating air at the source rather than relying on standalone room devices.
