What Is Bi - Polar Ionisation For Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)?
Bi-Polar Ionization (BPI) is a well-established HVAC air purification technology, studied for more than 50 years and supported by over 40 peer-reviewed scientific studies worldwide.
AtmosAir uses Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) Bi-Polar Ionization to actively purify indoor air by generating both positive and negative oxygen ions and distributing them through the HVAC supply air.
Unlike passive filtration, BPI works inside the occupied space, interacting directly with airborne and surface contaminants at their source to deliver improved HVAC air purification.

How AtmosAir Removes Particles: Particle Agglomeration
Bi-polar ions cause fine airborne particles to attract and bond together through a process called agglomeration.
This makes particles:

Easier to capture by standard HVAC filters
Many particles - especially those generated by occupants - never reach HVAC filters and remain suspended in the breathing zone for hours. AtmosAir causes these particles to settle more rapidly out of the 4–7 ft breathing zone, reducing inhalation exposure.
This process works on all particle sizes, including sub-micron particles such as viruses, which would otherwise require HEPA or MERV 17+ filtration to capture.


What AtmosAir Bi-Polar Ionization Is Not
AtmosAir BPI DBD technology is not:
❌ An ozone generator
AtmosAir uses low voltage, balanced ion output, and controlled electrical potential to keep ozone generation well below all regulatory thresholds. Systems are UL 867 tested and UL 2998 certified (zero ozone).
❌ A corona discharge or electrostatic precipitator
AtmosAir does not charge particles to cling to surfaces. Instead, it neutralises charges through balanced positive and negative ion production.
❌ An uncontrolled system
AtmosAir systems feature variable output control. When connected to AtmosSmart, ion levels are dynamically adjusted in real time based on space conditions.
How Bi-Polar Ionisation Works Against Bacteria, Viruses, and Germs
Bi-polar ions surround the surface proteins (such as hemagglutinin) that enable microorganisms to infect host cells.
These ions form hydroxyl radicals (OH), which remove hydrogen atoms from the surface proteins and convert them into water. This process destroys the microorganism’s surface structure at a molecular level, rendering it incapable of causing infection - even if inhaled.
This mechanism has been independently tested against a wide range of bacteria and viruses, including human coronavirus strains.


How Bi-Polar Ionisation Reduces Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
AtmosAir bi-polar ions surround VOC molecules and break down their hydrocarbon chains.
